OTTAWA, Kan. – Ottawa University is pleased to announce the addition of men’s volleyball as an intercollegiate varsity athletic team, set to play during the 2015-16 school year. The men’s volleyball program will be the 23rd athletic team offered by OU.
"Men's volleyball is experiencing impressive growth in the NAIA and Midwest region right now,” said Director of Athletics Arabie Conner. “We are anxious to be a part of this growing collegiate sport and be a part of the NAIA's efforts in making it a national championship sport in the near future."
As of the 2014-15 season, there are 26 NAIA men’s volleyball teams. Briar Cliff University (Iowa) will be joining Ottawa University in 2015-16 to bring the total number of programs to 28.
With an outstanding record as head women’s volleyball coach over the past year, Melissa Blessington has accepted the additional role as head men’s volleyball coach effective immediately. To date, Blessington has amassed a 21-9 record in her first season with the Lady Braves, and the team is currently in a tie for second place in the KCAC.
"Coach Blessington has made a quick impact in her first year, leading our women's team through a very successful first season,” said Conner. “Her recruiting efforts over the past year have led to tremendous growth and development throughout the season. We believe she has the competitive drive and passion to lead our efforts in building an equally competitive men's program."
Before coming to OU, Blessington spent three years at Southwestern Community College (SWCC). She led the team to a 37-10 mark in 2013 while receiving votes in the NJCAA II Poll. Blessington finished her three years at SWCC with an overall record of 72-52. Under her leadership, SWCC finished fifth at the 2013 NJCAA II Tournament and earned Region D Coach of the Year honors. Blessington coached one NJCAA All-American, six All-Region and eight All-Conference players; 10 Academic All-Region players; and had a 90 percent graduation rate.
"It has been an amazing experience serving as the head coach of the successful Lady Braves team, and I am excited to extend that experience to the new men’s team,” said Blessington. “There are already great men's teams in our area, which will mean great competition year in and year out. I look forward to the challenge of starting this program and hopefully making it an annual contender."
